Director Terry Dunn Meurer describes what it was like being in the war room for the Investigation Discovery Karen Read documentary series A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read.

Director Terry Dunn Meurer didn’t know a lot about Karen Read before taking on the Investigation Discovery docuseries project, but she quickly learned it was an opportunity she couldn’t pass up.

“This is an amazing case,” says Dunn Meurer in our video interview. “You don’t say no to that kind of access and that incredible story, the suspicious behavior on everyone’s part.”

Karen Read Documentary Series: A Body in the Snow

A Body in the Snow: The Trial of Karen Read follows every detail of the death of John O’Keefe on January 29, 2022, including O’Keefe’s girlfriend Karen Read’s story versus that of the Alberts (the friends he was visiting that night). Dunn Meurer captures the trial that followed with exclusive behind-the-scenes footage in the war room for Read’s defense. (The case ended in a mistrial in 2024 and is now in its second trial.)

“It’s really divided the community there, which is sad. Friendships have been destroyed. People are careful not to talk about it because you don’t know what side someone’s on.”

But why has this case captured the attention of the nation? Dunn Meurer has some ideas.

“I think there’s corruption everywhere, not deep-seated, but there are some bad actors and actresses when it comes to law enforcement. I think people think this is another case where a beautiful young woman is being framed. I think it has to do with Karen and her personality. She’s beautiful and articulate. If the profile of the defendant was something different, maybe the case wouldn’t have gotten that kind of attention.”

The way Taylor Swift has her Swifties, Read has her own squad of followers, something Dunn Meurer’s docuseries depicts, showing mobs of people in pink outside the Massachusetts courthouse.

“If you’re on the Free Read team, this documentary is not going to change people’s minds. We tried to be as unbiased as we could because we knew the trial was coming up.”
