Between Euphoria, Hacks, and Ted, Alanna Ubach is having one helluva year. She might be just as fearless as her Ted character, Susan Bennett.

What’s it like to work with Seth MacFarlane? After two seasons of playing Susan on Peacock’s Ted, Alanna Ubach has deciphered his comedic formula.

“If a mad scientist invited SNL and Darren Aronofsky over for a sleepover, the offspring could potentially be that delivery of comedy,” says Ubach. “Finding the high dramatic stakes in everything but you’re winking at the audience.”

The ever-accommodating Susan goes on a wild ride in Season 2 of the Peacock comedy series. She has sex with her husband (Scott Grimes) in front of a stranger, she agrees to disagree with her pro-choice niece (Giorgia Whigham), she drinks a lot of wine, and finally, she takes the fall for her son (Max Burkholder) and his teddy bear, culminating in a brief prison stint. Forget Marvel superheroes: Is Susan the most fearless character on television?

Ubach points to a real-life reference for her character’s blind audacity.

“Sarah Palin. Can you believe how relaxed she was during that entire run of that campaign? She had no business sitting there across from some of the greatest interviewers in history and the world. Some of the most highly intelligent people. I think a lot of the time those very religious people in a sense sometimes think, ‘It’s God’s calling. That’s why I’m here. It’s much bigger than me.’ I think Susan is a good Christian woman and assumes everyone is just like her. She’s very naive and isn’t the most worldly.”

I had a very candid conversation with Ubach about a Susan spin-off (Young Susan, anyone?), who could have played Susan in the Ted movies, and the future of the MacFarlane franchise that won’t die. Watch or listen below!

All seasons of Ted are streaming on Peacock.
