Brit born Sam Tutty makes quite the splash in the only original Broadway show to open this past season: Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York). He plays Dougal Todd, an overly eager young man who travels from the UK, with little money in his pocket, to attend the wedding of his estranged, wealthy father. Greeting him at the airport is the sister of the bride, Robin Rainey (Christiani Pitts), a jaded New Yorker who harbors quite a few secrets. Dougal is excited to explore the NYC he knows from action films and rom-coms. Robin cannot wait to get rid of him. But she is tasked to pick up her sister’s wedding cake and Dougal goes along for the ride. Then, not surprisingly for a Broadway musical rom-com, the two form a bond of sorts.

Two Strangers boasts music by Jim Barne and book and lyrics by Kit Buchan. The show was first produced in 2019 in Ipswich and Northampton (then titled The Season) and transferred to the West End in 2024. It then had its U.S. premiere at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 2025 before bowing on Broadway this past November.

Tutty is a marvel onstage, emanating ebullience. His opening number “New York,” invites us in and from there we are hooked. He’s a pure delight.

This is the actor’s Broadway debut and first Tony nomination. He’s also earned Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle nominations. On awards season, he offers, “It’s crazy, it’s something I’ve never experienced in my entire life. The workload is unbelievable…it’s surreal…so intense…”

The thesp debuted on the West End in Once on This Island in 2019. He originated the titular role in the London production of Dear Evan Hanson in 2019 and went on to win the Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical, among other accolades.

He co-starred in the Channel 4 soap, Hollyoaks, playing Timmy Simons for 21 episodes.

Two Strangers (Carry a Cake Across New York) is currently playing at the Longacre Theatre (220 W. 48th St, NYC). For tickets: TWO STRANGERS.

The Contending had the pleasure of a VIDEO chat with an exhausted, but appreciative and excited, Tutty.
