It’s a good morning for Paul Thomas Anderson fans with his adored One Battle After Another leading the nominations with 6. The Best Feature category was exanded from five nominee to ten, making way for films like Lurker, Sorry, Baby, and Bugonia to make the cut. Some of my favorite mentions here are two nominations for Blue Moon (for stars Ethan Hawke and Andrew Scott, respectively), Harris Dickinson scoring a nod for Breakthrough Director for Urchin, Tonatiuh for Breakthrough Performance for Kiss of the Spider Woman, and Tessa Thompson’s nomination in the Lead Performance category for Hedda.

I am very curious about the big films in International Feature this season. Neon’s Sentimental Value only picked up mentions for Stellan Skarsgård and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas in Outstanding Supporting Performance while No Other Choice nabbed nominations for International Feature, Adapted Screenplay, and Leading Performance.

Are there any surprises or disappointments for you?

    Surprises:
Ms Farsi's Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk which hopefully means more attention towards the film and its subject.
Mr Laxe for Sirât (Yet no Best Feature?).

I´m especially happy for Kelly Richardt and also Oliver Laxe for Directing because their noms really come as a surprise, at least for me. Besides, everything for OBAA is well deserved – hope for more to come!

I've been thinking recently about how this might be an odd year for the Independent Spirit Awards and I think that list of Best Picture nominees showcases exactly how that might be the case.

Things I was particularly glad to see nominated:
Sound of Falling not only in International but also in Screenplay
    The nominations for The Mastermind
    Abou Sangaré
Sopé Dìrísù breaking into a competetive field
Put Your Soul on Your Hand and Walk
