This one snuck up on me. Today, Netflix released the full Monster: The Ed Gein Story trailer, and it’s a doozy. Charlie Hunnam plays the infamous psychopath who inspired everything from The Silence of the Lambs to Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Psycho. In fact, never one for a contained narrative, producer Ryan Murphy apparently includes the character of Alfred Hitchcock (Tom Hollander) and Anthony Perkins (Joey Pollari) in the limited series’ narrative. Apparently, they’re going to explore not only the origins of Gein but his impact on culture as well. Hell, they’re even throwing in Will Brill as Tobe Hooper.
This just shot to the top of my “must see” list for the year. Could this be the season that finally brings broad Emmy glory to the Monster series? Yes, we had The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which netted an Emmy for Niecy Nash, but nothing has reached the heights of American Crime Story. Judging from the trailer below, they’re going full-on for this one. Perhaps this brings Charlie Hunnam an Emmy?
It all depends on their appetite for a man dancing around in women’s skin.
We’ll find out on October 3.
