Since the mid-‘80s, Jeff Kober has had quite the career in film and TV. His breakout role was the mysterious, hypnotic Staff Sergeant Dodger on ABC’s extraordinary drama, China Beach, which ran for four seasons from 1988 to 1991.
This season he can be seen on Episodes 10-15 of the HBO MAX smash series, The Pitt, as Duke, Dr. Robby’s motorcycle buddy who has been having throat issues. Duke arrives as the ER is in total chaos from a potential cyberattack forcing the hospital to shut down their system and move to analog.
Robby has plans for a mysterious bike riding sabbatical, once his shift is over. But he insists on staying until Duke’s CT scan results come in. When they finally do, it shows an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm. Robby makes Duke promise to have his surgery. He also confesses his suicidal thoughts to Duke.
Kober and Wyle have incredible chemistry. Duke and Robby have an immediate and intense closeness we’ve never seen Robby share with anyone before. Their scenes are quite intimate.
Kober should definitely be in the Guest Emmy conversation.
Of course, for anyone familiar with Kober’s work, that kind of instant bond establishing is something he excels at.
Prior to China Beach, Kober had featured roles in a number of TV shows including V, Highway to Heaven, The Twilight Zone, Falcon Crest and MacGyver.
China Beach was a groundbreaking series that dared to question America’s involvement in Vietnam while honestly portraying the valiant doctors, nurses and soldiers caught in the madness. The series was nominated for 29 Emmy Awards, winning five, including two for Dana Delaney’s McMurphy and one for Marg Helgenberger’s KC. Kober did exceptional work on the series.
Post-China Beach he has appeared as guest or recurring in a slew of TV shows including The X-Files, Walker, Texas Ranger, Charmed, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, JAG, Star Trek: Voyager, NYPD Blue, Star Trek: Enterprise, ER, The Shield, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Criminal Minds, 24, The Closer, Supernatural, Sons of Anarchy, Lost, CSI: Miami, New Girl, The Walking Dead, Shameless, NCIS: Los Angeles, Sneaky Pete, Big Dogs and Big Sky.
In 2020 he joined the cast of the popular Daytime soap General Hospital as the villainous Cyrus Renault, brother of Laura Collins (Genie Francis). He was only contracted for a six-month gig, but was so popular, he continued for five years and won a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
His screen credits include Alien Nation (1988), The First Power (1990), Tank Girl (1995), Inferno (1999), A Man Apart (2003), The Guilt Trip (2012), Sully (2016), Leave No Trace(2018) and Lie Exposed (2019), which he also wrote, based on his play.
The Pitt is currently streaming on HBO MAX.
