Edi Patterson talks to The Contending about The Righteous Gemstones’ final season and the idea for a tent revival tour: “The whole thing would be wild!”

Like the show’s fans, Edi Patterson was sad to see The Righteous Gemstones end this season.

“It was devastatingly sad,” says Patterson in a video interview, “but that has morphed into incredible wonder and gratitude. I can’t believe we got to do this for four seasons and make something this epic and wild and big! Mostly now I feel so full of gratitude about all of it.”

After all, on what other show can you experience Sopranos and Succession-level family drama, crazy jetpack stunts, hijinks like catching your dad in that position with his new girlfriend, and beautiful musical performances?

The Righteous Gemstones Season 4

This season, Judy has to nurse her ailing husband (Tim Baltz) after he experiences a pole-dancing mishap, demonstrating some incremental growth for the only Gemstone daughter — even when she shoves his wheelchair so she can accost a group of strangers.

“I think when Judy is scared or feeling confused, that comes out pretty violently and in ways that the filter’s not there, so it comes out in bursts. I don’t think she’s trying to be a dick to BJ; there’s just so much noise in her brain.”

Despite the end of the series, Patterson believes there’s still room for Judy to grow and for more stories to be told. She just doesn’t know in what capacity yet.

“I feel like the Gemstones and their world is still alive and it will still be a thing of, does Danny [McBride] want us to go back and visit it? Because I would be up for it. We’ve talked loosely about doing a live show like a tent revival. They’re alive in the world and who knows what might happen with them? The whole thing would be wild!”

Before the finale, I got to talk to Patterson about saying goodbye to the series, including her teenage counterpart Emma Shannon as Young Judy. Watch the full conversation below!
