Re:Zero coming back so soon was a welcome surprise to many since there was a four year gap between season two and three. Based on what I have seen, the shortened time interval has taken nothing away from this intriguing, entertaining story. Season four starts right where we left off in season 3 in the aftermath of the Witch Cult’s attack on Priestella with everyone regrouping. While the Archbishops have either left or been defeated, Gluttony and Lust’s particular brand of horror are still in effect. The people Lust transformed are still trapped as monsters and Gluttony has devoured several people’s memories, leaving them in comas. Or, in Julius Juukuliu’s case, awake but nobody but Subaru remembers him. Gluttony’s attacks have had a lasting impact throughout this show and, with the most recent and most brutal, Anastasia has an idea to go to a powerful Sage to learn how to undo the damage but no one has ever reached this Sage before.
As much as I love this huge cast and the epicness of all of them fighting in season 3, it was fantastic when the poster for this season came out and you could see that limiting this part of the story to just a few characters feels like the right creative choice. There are a lot of plot points and motivations going on; even keeping track of the powers these characters have can be tough. Especially since the lore is getting bigger and more interesting as we go. There are new details about the Sage and the challenges of getting to him (or her); it is unclear on gender. This is an interesting new challenge for them and of the mythology. We have learned at least some aspects of the witches but the heroes of the past are still a mystery. At this point the witches and the heroes may be more titles than actual declarations of good and evil, and what we see so far in the first two episodes reinforces that.
Subaru’s growth as a character continues, despite the issues he has had with Julius in the past, a lot due to Subaru’s own arrogance. Subaru is horrified by what has happened to Julius and is determined that the others know he is a friend and that they should help him. Subaru and he have some very touching moments and then they do go back to teasingly insulting each other. It isn’t all doom here. In fact Re: Zero’s ability to shift between Subaru’s jokingly complaining to sudden horror is still shockingly effective. Even knowing Subaru’s ability did not take away from some already emotionally intense moments the show throws at us. Another part I really enjoyed is Beatrice and Subaru’s banter. She chides him for not acknowledging her cuteness and he teases her right back. The way they fight together is also great, and the bond they have built over all these seasons is something I really cannot wait to see more of.
Right now, everything is on track for another great season of Re:Zero, a show that has yet to disappoint. There’s a new mission that is different enough but still very nicely fits into this world offering banter galore and the continued camaraderie of this cast. The mission is set and, in the opening, hints of things to come with some new characters and maybe a final battle with Gluttony have me bursting with anticipation!
