Does Whitaker have a secret romance going on? The Pitt actor Gerran Howell weighs in on Amy, Dr. Robby, and more in this video chat with The Contending.
Whitaker comes into The Pitt Season 2 with a whole different vibe. He’s confident, competent, and doesn’t have to change his scrubs once! What happened to the young doc in the months since audiences last saw him? Actor Gerran Howell has some ideas.
“I think he has to come into Season 2 a little bit more full of beans,” says Howell with his Welsh accent. “That’s maybe not the right word. But he knows that he belongs there now, he has a purpose there. So he’s a lot more comfortable being in that environment.”
Does it have anything to do with his relationship with Amy? In Season 1, he bonded with the wife of a dying patient, and in Season 2, he’s helping her out on the farm. Contrary to staff speculation (and mine!), Howell believes there’s nothing romantic going on.
“You don’t want to completely define these things. Of course, I kind of have as Whitaker. But if I’m being honest, I think it is platonic. Sorry to disappoint. You know, you always think, is there romance there? I don’t think so. Maybe from Amy’s side, there might be. But, you know, they’re both people who have kind of found each other because there’s something they’re both missing. They’re kind of filling a space in each other’s lives, for better or worse.”
So maybe there isn’t romance going on between Whitaker and Amy, but some fans want a romance between Whitaker and…Dr. Robby. If you hit a specific algorithm on social media, you’ll discover fan art of them kissing and engaging in a full-blown romance. Howell says he embraces the different fan interpretation.
“It just shows that the characters have made an impact on them. And it’s great. It’s really lovely. But we try not to let it seep into our view of the characters. It’s its own, maybe subculture isn’t the right word, but it’s its own space, you know. And you also don’t want to intrude on that. You want to appreciate it.”
I had a great conversation with Howell about his blow-up with Langdon, what Whitaker and Santos might binge-watch, and what makes his character such a good fit to work in The Pitt. Watch or listen below!
