Feature debut writer-director-actor-producer Reed Arnold has fashioned a slick, smart and clever rom-com that harkens back to the quick-witted 1940s romantic comedies with a touch of ’90s sitcom.
Do Us Part centers on Ryan (Travis Laughlin) and Mark (Arnold) who have been besties since college. Back then, Ryan was the clean cut nice guy with Mark being the womanizing cad. Not much has changed, now, a decade later. Ryan is about to marry his sweet fiancé Julia (Laura Delhauer), but everything gets quite complicated when his other college bestie, Rose (Kelly Russo), decides to crash the wedding to convey her true feelings to Ryan. She’s in love with him.
Mark does what he can to try and get rid of Rose and things go sideways from there with ensuing mayhem.
Arnold perspicaciously casts himself as the third lead (with all the best lines) and avoids the trap that too many hyphenates make when they decide to play the lead. The actor’s performance is much more layered than you’d initially think. He’s a rogue and lothario, who says what’s on his mind no matter who he offends. “You’re shallow, you’re broken, you’re selfish,” Ryan angrily tells Mark in a key scene. All of that is true, but Mark is hiding a much more vulnerable side.
Arnold’s stage plays have been produced in Los Angeles, New York City and San Antonio.
His dark comedy Dial E. for Euthanasia is in pre-production at Votif Films.
Do Us Part has played many festivals and picked up a slew of awards. The film is currently playing in theaters in NYC and will open in Los Angeles on August 14th.
