Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair‘s Jane Kaczmarek reveals the instigator behind the Hulu reboot and why she wants to go for a particular Emmy record.

While Hal and Lois celebrate 40 years of marriage in the Hulu reboot, Malcolm in the Middle mom Jane Kaczmarek has known her real-life husband for 50 years, despite the high school sweethearts only getting married last year.

“My husband was saying, ‘No one is would believe it,'” says Kaczmarek with a laugh. “Because we’re 70—that it would be this hot. I mean, my mother passed away a little while ago, so I can say that in public. [My husband and I] saw Led Zeppelin together in the early 70s, and you hear that Led Zeppelin song ‘Kashmir,’ and we just start taking our clothes off.”

How very Hal and Lois of them!

What’s Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair About?

Picking up 20 years after it went off the air, Hulu’s Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair finds Malcolm’s crazy family still up to their old tricks, like Hal staging a musical performance of Bruno Mars’ “Locked Out of Heaven” in a grocery store to impress his long-suffering wife ahead of their anniversary.

But Malcolm, himself, has separated from the family—failing to disclose he has been raising a daughter on his own. While Frankie Muniz hasn’t acted in years (he’s pursuing a race driving career), Kaczmarek and her on-screen hubby Bryan Cranston were impressed with Muniz’s adult acting skills after being out of the game for so long.

“I mean, he transcends the good child actor,” says Kaczmarek. “And Bryan and I are both like, wow, this kid could have a career in acting if he doesn’t get killed in a race car. Talk about parenting forever. Can you imagine being the mother of a kid who wants to drive a race car?”

With many shows from 20 years ago returning this season (see: Scrubs and The Comeback), Kaczmarek believes it was the right time for a show like hers to return.

“Malcolm, man, it’s timeless. It’s something you can sit and watch with your kids. I mean, as corny as that sounds, take away your kid’s device.”

I had a fun and candid conversation with the Emmy-nominated actress (who’s never not been nominated for Malcolm in the Middle, by the way), including what a Lois and Walter White pairing would have been like (we got to see a glimpse of it in an alternate Breaking Bad ending).
