‘Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End’ S2 Thrives In the Journey

The second season premiere of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End feels exactly like any other episode. While Frieren, Stark, and Fern are now able to go further north due to Fern winning the title of First-Class Mage, it has not shaken up the core of what the show focuses on. There are concerns over money so they’re looking for some jobs, there’s a little more backstory of Frieren and the original hero’s party, there are some fun magic ideas and a bit of action, and also the joy of just spending time with these characters and watching them slowly progress.

Frieren seems to be smiling more, and is more excited about just being on this journey with her friends and giving more voice to those feelings. Fern and Stark still have their little fights. Fern’s putdowns still break Stark but they have a nice moment of companionship here, as well as him ruining it immediately.

There is also a fun adventure in a crystal cave that creates a new challenge for the party, but also provides a rededication of what they all bring to the party. We do get a bit of story detail about the Northern Magic Corps dealing with demons; this may be something that comes back up or it may not. But how we learn about it was just another nice moment in the show to remind us of what is happening in this world, and how it could change the trajectory of their party’s journey.

Basically the show is right back at it. We are given some light humor, some good bonding moments, and the knowledge that we will be seeing more of this world, and potentially reconnecting with some characters from last season, or meeting new ones. There will be problems and detours at times but we know that they can handle it, and we just enjoy seeing how they end up winning. The joy of this show is taking in all of its moments, from the quiet talk while on the road to the big action moments we can get from time to time. We are journeying on the road with these three, and I cannot wait to see where they go next.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End airs Fridays on Crunchyroll.

After seeing Gangs of New York in college, I decided to see the other Best Picture contenders that year because I had never done that before. I have been addicted to Oscar watching and film ever since. Over time, it led to discovering the Emmys and believing that television is just as good if not better than film. From there, I started following anime year-round and even looking into critically acclaimed video games and to a lesser extent music. I love writing about and immersing myself in so many creative fields and seeing how much there is out there to discover.
