Taylor Sheridan’s new westernish TV drama, The Madison, follows the NYC-based Clyburn family as they venture to the Madison River Valley of southwest Montana. They intend to bury the patriarch, Preston (Kurt Russell), who died in a tragic airplane crash along with his brother Paul (Matthew Fox). The non-linear narrative centers on matriarch Stacy (Michelle Pfeiffer, spectacularly good), her two daughters Abigail (Beau Garrett) and Paige (Elle Chapman), Paige’s husband Russell (Patrick J. Adams) and Abigail’s two daughters.
Stacy and her daughters must deal with the guilt, grief and emotional turmoil caused by the loss. Stacy also begins to realize there was a huge part of her husband she never bothered to get to know. The family must navigate saying goodbye along with coming to terms with a host of messy realizations.
The Madison represents a refreshing departure for Sheridan. There’s no Beth Dutton here to blow shit up and beat people senseless–as much as I love that and look forward to Dutton Ranch! Emmy nominee Christina Alexandra Voros directs all six episodes of the debut season.
And while the series is a fantastic showcase for Pfeiffer’s immense talents, Garrett more than holds her own opposite this titanic thesp. In many ways Garrett’s Abby represents the complicated conundrum at the heart of the series: she’s New York born and bred but finds herself drawn to the Montana wilderness, mostly thanks to a budding relationship with the sweet, hunk of a country-boy Deputy Sheriff Van (an excellent Ben Schnetzer).
Abby is yet another tough but vulnerable addition to the Sheridansphere, and Garrett kicks ass in the role. It’s the kind of performance, along with Pfeiffer’s, that should receive Emmy consideration.
Garrett began her career as a model in her early teens. She was cast in an episode of Entourage in 2004 and went on to appear in episodes of House, Criminal Minds, Memphis Beat, CSI: NY, Glee, Longmire and The Rookie. She was a series regular on Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce as well as season one of The Good Doctor.
Her film credits include Turistas (2006), Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007), Tron: Legacy (2010), Freelancers (2012) and Knight of Cups (2015).
Season one of The Madison proved the biggest TV debut of Sheridan’s career to date, which is saying a lot since the Yellowstone franchise has been a tremendous success. Season two was filmed right after the first season and season three has been greenlighted and will begin filming in April 2027.
The Madison Season One is currently streaming on Paramount+.
