Ann Marie Allison’s You’re Dating a Narcissist! reminds us of rom-coms of yesteryear with a heartfelt, hilarious performance from one of our best comedic actresses.
You know when you’re scrolling through Instagram or TikTok and come across a meme about dating and how you’re not the one in the wrong — it’s them? (Or maybe this is my algorithm…)
That’s Marisa Tomei’s character in a nutshell in Ann Marie Allison’s delightful You’re Dating a Narcissist! She’s a walking, talking social media quote letting you know it’s not your fault, it’s theirs, because *dun dun dun* “You’re dating a narcissist!” as she says —- also known as “a narc” — although Sherry Cola’s Diane reminds her that a narc is something else entirely.
Tomei’s Judy is a psych professor living in New York whose daughter Eva (Ciara Bravo) is in an art graduate program in LA. When Eva meets a wealthy doctor and gets engaged in six weeks, Judy and her best friend Diane (Cola) fly out to LA to intervene. (Tomei’s physical reaction to Eva’s engagement should be studied in comedy classes.)
Ann Marie Allison’s direction partnered with her script with Jenna Milly shrewdly pit Judy as the antagonist for most of the film, ala Julia Roberts in My Best Friend’s Wedding. You cringe watching her mutter and “Judy” every situation. But is Judy really completely off base? Is Eva’s fiance Theo (Marco Pigossi) really that bad? This rom-com has fun twists and turns that you never see coming.
I also appreciate that Marisa Tomei, who’s made her career out of being a supporting player, is back front and center in Narcissist!, while ushering in another up-and-coming actress who’s stealing scenes in almost everything she’s in: Sherry Cola (see: Nobody Wants This, Joy Ride, Poker Face). It’s like two great “best friend” characters have teamed up for an Avengers-level partnership. I could watch a TV show of just Judy and Diane.
