(NEW YORK) SEPTEMBER 26, 2024 – Winners of the Documentary categories of the 45th Annual News and Documentary Emmy®Awards were announced tonight by The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS). The awards were presented at the Palladium Times Square in New York City.

Alex Gibney, revered documentarian, director and producer, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to the field of documentary filmmaking. The award was presented by Sheila Nevins, Documentary Filmmaker and Television Producer.

W. Kamau Bell, Emmy and Peabody Award-winning host, filmmaker, and stand-up comedian, served as host for the evening. Presenters for the evening included: Cristina Costantini – Director & Executive Producer, Science Fair: The Series (National Geographic), Jason Hehir – Director & Producer, Murder in Boston (HBO | Max), Barbara Kopple – Documentary Director & Producer (2023 Lifetime Achievement Honoree), Hilla Medalia – Director & Producer, Mourning in Lod (MTV Documentary Films) , Laurent Richard – Producer & Writer, Global Spyware Scandal: Exposing Pegasus (PBS/Frontline), Nancy Schwartzman – Director & Producer, Victim/Suspect (Netflix).

The News & Documentary Emmy® Awards are presented as two individual ceremonies: categories honoring Television News Programming were presented last night; categories honoring Documentaries presented tonight. Both last night’s and tonight’s ceremony were live-streamed on our dedicated platform, Watch.TheEmmys.TV powered by Vimeo.

“With so much change at hand these days, it’s reassuring to note one very important constant:  the consistent quality of the work being done every day by the talented and hard-working individuals of our creative communities. It’s our honor tonight – and each year – to shine the Emmy spotlight on the truly excellent work that we have all enjoyed over the past year,” said Terry O’Reilly, Chairman, NATAS.

“Those who shine a light on inconvenient truths, give voice to the voiceless, or simply report documented facts are far too often punished through efforts to demonize and delegitimize such essential work. On these two nights, we do the vital opposite. The Emmys® celebrate those who face these headwinds to bring important stories to our screens and, in turn, provide a vision of excellence that inspires the next generation to follow,” said Adam Sharp, NATAS CEO & President.

The second annual inductees to the Gold and Silver Circle for documentary were inducted tonight. The Gold and Silver Circle is a society honoring members of the television and wider broadcasting community who have made an enduring contribution to the industry. These honorees are an elite group of professionals who have made significant contributions to television for 50 and 25 years, respectively.
