In a video interview with The Contending, St. Denis Medical’s Wendi McClendon-Covey addresses that big Season 2 finale reveal and gives us an update on her neck after missing the Oscars’ Bridesmaids reunion.
St. Denis Medical threw fans a HUGE twist in the Season 2 finale when a heavily medicated Ron (David Alan Grier) awoke from open heart surgery asking, “Where’s my Joyce?” Does Ron have feelings for the high-strung executive director (Wendi McClendon-Covey)?
“When I read that, I was like, oh, hello!” says McClendon-Covey. “Since they’ve known each other since they were interns, maybe something happened back in the day. Then he got married and had kids and got divorced. But, you know, in Season 3, is it too early to start doing flashbacks?”
It’s never too early to start doing flashbacks! Who wouldn’t want to see Joyce and Ron as interns or even a flashback to when she met her on-again, off-again love Sanderson (Steve Little).
“I love that he’s just an agent of idiocy. And I buy that someone like Joyce just goes for the low-hanging fruit, because it’s one more thing she can check off her list. In the end, though, it seems like for me, I want Joyce to always be a little miserable. She might find her happiness for a little bit. And Sanderson is as miserable as they come.”
Joyce spends Season 2 trying NOT to get married to Sanderson, after she makes the decision to marry him when she employs her three-second rule. What goes through her head when she’s making such an important decision?
“I think Joyce sees a bunch of cats playing poker. The thing with Joyce is that she tries way too hard. If she just dialed it back a little bit, she might make a good decision.”
I had a fun conversation with McClendon-Covey about the physicality she brings to Joyce, what it was like filming the Sanderson engagement photoshoot, and her dream cast for Joyce’s family. Watch or listen below!
