Happy Tuesday, dear readers! Each week, we’ll rank the top 10 films in a specific category. While we aim to tie these lists to big releases, that won’t always be the case. Our goal? For you to enjoy, share your own lists, and join in on a lively, friendly debate. This is an interactive space to build community here at The Contending.
No fancy intros, no long essays – just a category and a list. Sound good?
The Fantastic Four: First Steps lands this week, with early buzz suggesting it could give the MCU a much-needed jolt. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach star, joined by a strong supporting cast including Julia Garner and Ralph Ineson.
What has me most excited is the score. Oscar-winner Michael Giacchino blends retro brass with futuristic synths in a Jetsons-meets-Star Trek soundscape, capturing the film’s tone with style. Giacchino, who scored MCU’s Doctor Strange, Spider-Man: Homecoming, No Way Home, and Thor: Love and Thunder, is once again proving why Marvel keeps calling.
In 2023, Clarence and I had the privilege of attending the Middleburg Film Festival, where we heard a live performance of Giacchino’s work by the Loudon Symphony Orchestra at the annual Composer Tribute Concert. Giacchino accepted Middleburg’s Distinguished Composer Award and wowed the audience with the debut of his Society of the Snow score. The moment is easily one of my most unforgettable festival experiences.
To celebrate, the maestro behind The Fantastic Four: First Steps, we’re ranking the ten best film scores by Michael Giacchino.
