Happy Tuesday, dear readers! Each week, we’ll rank the top 10 films in a specific category. While we aim to tie these lists to big releases, that won’t always be the case. Our goal? For you to enjoy, share your own lists, and join in on a lively, friendly debate. This is an interactive space to build community here at The Contending.
No fancy intros, no long essays – just a category and a list. Sound good?
This week’s major release is Eddington, the latest from director Ari Aster, starring Joaquin Phoenix, Emma Stone, Pedro Pascal, Deirdre O’Connell, Clifton Collins Jr., and Austin Butler. The film premiered at Cannes to a mixed reception, which isn’t unusual for Aster, whose work often divides critics and audiences. Known for emotionally intense, slow-burning storytelling, Aster received widespread acclaim for Hereditary (2018), but responses were more muted for Midsommar (2019) and even more hesitant for Beau Is Afraid (2023). Eddington, his fourth feature, seems to follow in the footsteps of Beau, currently holding a 67 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have praised the performances and direction, but described the film as tonally uneven and an overstuffed satire that, while thought-provoking, lacks narrative cohesion.
No matter where you land on the film, one thing is clear: Joaquin Phoenix is one of the greatest actors of the 21st century. The Academy Award winner for Joker (2019) is known for his raw, transformative performances and remains one of Hollywood’s most fascinating figures. He is unpredictable, immensely talented, and a passionate advocate for animal rights, environmental causes, and social justice.
To celebrate this four-time Oscar nominee, let’s count down Joaquin Phoenix’s ten best performances.
