Happy Tuesday, dear readers! Each week, we’ll rank the top 10 films in a specific category. While we aim to tie these lists to big releases, that won’t always be the case. Our goal? For you to enjoy, share your own lists, and join in on a lively, friendly debate. This is an interactive space to build community here at The Contending.
No fancy intros, no long essays – just a category and a list. Sound good?
This week, we’re spotlighting Colin Farrell, whose raw intensity and chameleon-like range have lit up screens for decades. Audiences at the Middleburg Film Festival were buzzing about his gripping turn in Edward Berger’s The Ballad of a Small Player., With the film out now in limited release and streaming on Netflix starting October 29, now’s the perfect moment to rank his best performances. From brooding dramas to offbeat comedies, Farrell’s career is a masterclass in versatility.
Farrell broke out with Tigerland (2000), followed by blockbusters like Minority Report (2002) and Phone Booth (2002). His Golden Globe-winning role in In Bruges (2008) and an Oscar-nominated performance in The Banshees of Inisherin (2022) cemented his critical acclaim. From the surreal The Lobster (2015) to recent hits, Farrell keeps pushing boundaries.
Let’s dive into Colin Farrell’s finest hours on screen and rank his top 10 performances. Share your favorites below!

Nope! In Bruges is the absolute number 1.
Then again, perhaps I shouldn't comment on Mr Farrell's acting as someone who adores his insane performance in Daredevil (There is over the top, there is exaggeratedly cheesy over the top and there is THAT Bullseye).
I think I agree about In Bruges being first. I’m not 100% sure, as it’s either of these films that can first come to mind when I think of Farrell.
I might have found a place for The Beguiled or his sex tape 😁🤪
