Happy Tuesday, dear readers! Each week, we’ll rank the top 10 films in a specific category. While we aim to tie these lists to big releases, that won’t always be the case. Our goal? For you to enjoy, share your own lists, and join in on a lively, friendly debate. This is an interactive space to build community here at The Contending.
No fancy intros, no long essays – just a category and a list. Sound good?
This week’s big release is Joker: Folie à Deux, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, and Zazie Beetz. Phoenix returns to his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck, a mentally unstable patient with a dual identity, who finds himself in a twisted in love story while institutionalized. The original Joker (2019) earned 11 Academy Award nominations, winning Best Actor (Phoenix) and Best Original Score (Hildur Guðnadóttir).
In honor of the new film, we are celebrating the ten best performances from one of the greatest actors of his generation.
Let’s get to it!
10. Napoleon (2023)
9. Inherent Vice (2014)
8. Parenthood (1989)
7. You Were Never Really Here (2017)
6. C’mon C’mon (2021)
5. Walk the Line (2005)
4. Gladiator (2000)
3. The Master (2012)
2. Joker (2019)
1. Her (2013)
I have to strongly object to the ranking.
His performance in The Master isn't just number 1 worthy, it's an all timer on par with cinema's greatests!
I wouldn't argue. His top three are all #1 worthy.
