Somebody Somewhere show creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen are proud of their final season of the HBO comedy series.
It’s been several months since Somebody Somewhere took its final bow on HBO, and show creators Hannah Bos and Paul Thureen love that it’s out in the world.
“We love this season,” says Bos. “We’re so lucky we got to make this show in particular. We’re so proud of it.”
“It’s bittersweet,” echoes Thureen. “It’s like a mourning process to say goodbye to this phase of life. We’ve spent every day for the last six years thinking about it and dreaming about it, and a few months out from the finale, we’re really proud and lucky to have had the opportunity to make it.”
Bos says the show keeps finding new people.
“The world might be a little weirder right now, and it’s a comforting show if you need to hang out with some friends, some chosen family.”
Somebody Somewhere Season 3 Romantic Ending
This season, Sam (Bridget Everett) develops a crush on “Iceland” (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson), the mysterious man with the deep voice who sublets her father’s house. In the finale, he shows up just as she finishes singing “The Climb” for her friends, leaving us wanting more.

“We shot it where we didn’t know when he’d come in and how much he’d witness her singing,” says Bos. “It was so powerful for Sam to invite her friends to her space. This is her in her element, in her power. After Bridget sang, people were clapping and crying. It filled up this little dive bar so much. One of the beauties of the show is you get to see Bridget fucking Everett, and she knocks your socks off. For Darri to see that, it was so romantic.”
“There’s something about him,” says Thureen. “We wanted Darri. There’s something about the way Darri is. It’s not ‘Sam’s okay now because she found this man.’ She’s able to open herself up to a different type of love she’s been scared of. We shot it a few different ways to make sure it lands. There’s something about that take where she collapses into his chest and giggles. He’s such a big warm presence that knocks her off her axis. There’s something about him that’s comforting and intriguing. They’re both so cautious that they’re able to slowly take steps toward each other.”
Does Joel Have a Happy Ending? Somebody Somewhere Reddit is Skeptical
However, while Joel (Jeff Hiller) is seemingly happy in his relationship with Brad (Tim Badgley), Somebody Somewhere Reddit is pretty upset his happy ending doesn’t involve having kids, which was on his dream board in Season 1. Bos and Thureen said they don’t read the Somebody Somewhere Reddit (they’re too scared!), but they know it’s filled with some of the nicest fans.
“You adjust what you want when you find the right person,” says Bos. “You might not get everything on that vision board. Relationships are hard, and there’s a give and take, and you have to question things you want. Also, who knows what the future holds?”
“You also have Joel talking to Brad about what he’s not getting from his church,” adds Thureen. “It’s like a real grown-up conversation. The day-to-day stuff of relationships that are real big things.”
The Fun in Shooting Trisha’s STD Scene

Meanwhile, in one of the funniest scenes of the season, Trisha (Mary Catherine Garrison) learns she has an STD. . .from her ex-husband Rick!
“I think it sort of tickled us that it was a surprise,” says Thureen. “Seeing Trisha lose her mind at Rick on the phone, it’s just like letting Mary Catherine Garrison loose. It’s a great moment of her realization and then Sam realizing it.”
“That was really fun to shoot, too,” says Bos, “because we were shooting it in our hotel. We were all staying in this Hyatt in really small rooms — wonderful hotel by the way — just two feet away from them while she’s realizing she has the STD, and it was so subtle but so juicy. We were all trying so hard not to laugh. Then being cut with all the Bible Club stuff at the same time, and you have these women talking about STDs.”
How Somebody Somewhere Handles Grief
Somebody Somewhere Season 1 starts with Sam mourning the loss of her sister, and Thureen believes that grief takes on different forms on this show, including Joel’s grief of not getting the things he wants. There’s also the journey of grief and how it changes over time.
“In Season 3, that can be a new type of loss when you’re used to feeling this raw pain,” says Thureen. “Of course, that’s going to soften a bit and that makes you feel guilty. We check in with Sam on that grief journey. At the end of Season 1, her being able to go into her sister’s bedroom. I’m proud that that is a main throughline of this series.”
“Grief is such a big part of our lives,” says Bos, “and it’s something we fear. I hope this show is a celebration of grief, a celebration of life. It doesn’t go away. It just changes. You have to live with it. It can get smaller, but it’s still there. I hope this show gives people comfort so they can identify that grief and enjoy our characters going on these journeys and be with them.”
