Brendan Fraser’s official Oscar follow-up (I don’t count Killers of the Flower Moon) comes in the form of Searchlight’s Rental Family. I’ve heard very good things about this from early screenings. Based on the trailer, it seems touchy-feely enough to warm the hearts of many Academy voters, so we could be looking at Best Picture, Actor, etc. We’ll find out soon enough when the film premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.
More details follows the Rental Family trailer plus photos. The film debuts in theaters on November 21.
About the Film
Set against modern-day Tokyo, Rental Family follows an American actor (Brendan Fraser) who struggles to find purpose until he lands an unusual gig: working for a Japanese “rental family” agency, playing stand-in roles for strangers. As he immerses himself in his clients’ worlds, he begins to form genuine bonds that blur the lines between performance and reality. Confronting the moral complexities of his work, he rediscovers purpose, belonging, and the quiet beauty of human connection.

Doesn’t look like a player to me. 🤷🏼♂️
Thumbs Down! 👎 Way down! Per your own Mark Johnson's take:)
Rental Family (Searchlight Pictures)
What to make of this one? I can’t help but think this one screams pretender, but the Academy has gone for other feel-good fluff in recent years. Think: Green Book (2018) and CODA (2021), two recent winners that were softhearted, cookie-cutter films that just took over awards season. Perhaps it will be the same for Rental Family, but my gut-feeling on this initial trailer isn’t great.
