Netflix’s Emilia Pérez led all film contenders at the 82nd Annual Golden Globes Awards with four wins including Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and Non-English Language Film. Zoe Saldaña received the film’s only acting win, cementing her position as Oscar frontrunner in the Supporting Actress race. A24’s The Brutalist followed with three wins for Motion Picture Drama, Drama Actor, and Director.
There were some surprises along the way (Fernanda Torres!!!), but the moment of the evening belonged to The Substance’s Demi Moore whose acceptance speech for her Comedy / Musical Actress win had the audience in tears. Is this our new frontrunner for Lead Actress at the Oscars?
On the TV front, FX’s Shōgun went 4 for 4, winning all of its nominations in Drama Series, Drama Actor, Drama Actress, and Supporting Actor. MAX’s Hacks followed its 2024 Emmy wins with Globes for Comedy Series and Comedy Actress. FX’s The Bear won for Comedy Actor, marking Jeremy Allen White’s third Golden Globe for the role of Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto. On the Limited Series front, Netflix’s Baby Reindeer won for Limited Series and Supporting Actress in a TV Show. Side note: the Globes voice-over commentator mentioned that the emails shown in the series were duplicates of emails star/writer Richard Gadd received from his real-life stalker. Wonder if that will complicate the on-going lawsuit involving said stalker?
At any rate, here are the winners for the 82nd Annual Golden Globes.

OK, Zoe's in the lead for an Oscar now, Jean Smart has yet another award, and Kieran Culkin is probably guaranteed a nomination…and WTF is Jeremy Strong wearing?!? And how did it seem like a good idea? I didn't think I'd see anything like that again since, oh, 1983…
This is where you'd expect Ariana Grande to do well, so Zoe's win is significant.
Jeremy loves his bucket hats…
Dear God…he should have been sitting next to Andrew Scott in his baby-blue ensemble as well. On one hand, at least they're being original, but on the other hand…well, at least they were color-coordinated, right? Also, I LOVE how Melissa McCarthy basically flipped the bird at the usual suspects who go on about how any woman over a size 2 should do the decent thing by wearing black and hiding–seriously, that's one of the best "FUCK ALL Y'ALL!" outfits I think I've ever seen on an awards show! She's definitely lost some weight, but she's never going to be a skinny person, so why the hell not dress the way you want to, anyway?
Sigh…they're still saying The Bear is a comedy?
Apparently…
I don't think I can keep up an entire comments section on my own, but it's a matter of principle not to go Elsewhere, so…
Is it just me, or is Seth Rogan looking like a cross between Steven Spielberg and Richard Dreyfuss these days? And what was w/that routine with Catherine O'Hara, and who let it go on so long? They're fine, but the material just dragged…
So, let me get this straight: Emilia Perez is a Spanish-language film, but it's France's entry? How does that work?
Yay Colin Farrell! I still think he was robbed for Best Actor for Banshees!
OK, Demi is probably going to get an Oscar nom now! Sebastian probably not, but he's definitely not just another Marvel actor now, so good for him!
Thanks for fighting the good fight in the comments!
TBH, I thought the Vin Diesel Cinematic and Box Office Achievement presentation was FAR too long.
Yes, EP has been somewhat controversial for the strange country placement, but its director, composers/songwriters, etc are all French.
Demi may be the frontrunner to win. She's neck and neck with Mikey Madison, and that speech had people crying.
It's a dirty job, but someone's gotta do it, right?
As for Demi, we'll have to see how it shakes out; if she won, she wouldn't be any worse than most of the previous winners, and better than a number of them. It's interesting that, over the past few months, I've seen people writing about just how cruel '90s and '00s commenters were toward women in general, and certain women who were seen as less than; I've seen Monica Lewinsky specifically mentioned in this context, along with Paris Hilton (who I'm still not crazy about, but learning about her "troubled-teen school" past has made me a lot more sympathetic), and I'm inclined to put both Demi and Pamela Anderson in that category as well. I remember the sneering about "Gimme Moore" (how dare she want to be paid as well as her male co-stars and get the same perks?) and Pamela being seen as just another stupid bimbo, but apparently if you live along enough and stay reasonably sane, you get to have the last laugh, as both of them seem to be doing now. Whoever would have guessed?
WOOHOO Trent and Atticus! I first met Trent 30 years ago in Atlanta, and I'm so glad that he's not only still alive (we weren't sure about that for too long…), but productive and happy, especially the latter! (It was also cute to see how psyched Elton John was when they won!). Hey, I'm a fangirl of long standing, and I have my favorites… grin
I liked Wicked, but the "Cinematic and Box Office Achievement" category is still cringe.
It is, particularly when some of those nominees weren't even that significant in terms of box office…….
Who was it who presented that? I know I should know, but…
Vin Diesel
Weird that they did Drama before Musical/Comedy. I thought it was usually the other way round.
Saving the best for last.
Great speech from Adrien Brody–looking back to '03, it's something he's very good at, and it was so sweet that both his parents were there. (FWIW: his mom, Sylvia Plachy, is a renowned photographer who spent years working at the Village Voice. Have to admit it was sweet to see him get choked up over them.
Aw, Brady Corbet's daughter is adorable! This all must be so exciting for her…
Good to see Fernanda Torres win–hopefully this will get her an Oscar nomination.
Looks like picture will probably be between The Brutalist and Emilia Perez, but we shall see…Now I need to feed Romeo again and think about going to bed! Take care, everyone!

I am really behind on my contenders, need to get to screenings of Emilia Pérez, I'm Still Here and The Substance stat. But I'll have plenty of opportunities over the next couple of weeks.
Thrilled to see The Brutalist triumph tonight.
The Substance was solid although I didn't like the ending. Haven't seen the other two. Hard to find time these days.
You know, I really hope that a few more people will decided to migrate over here by Oscar night…apparently the reason they're still Elsewhere is due to all the other commenters, but nothing says they have to stay there, especially with so many fine writers from Over There being Over Here now, hint hint…
(Oh, wait, just looked at some of the commenters. Birds of a feather apparently do flock together…)
The day the Globe nominations were announced, I came here to comment but couldn't find anything posted about them. I'm pretty sure the post existed, but it was getting buried for some reason. The same thing happened with Critics' Choice. It looks like they've worked out their technical issues.
Hey Tom, thanks for mentioning that. We have an aggravatingly aggressive caching system. When you visit the page, hit refresh just once for the latest content. We did have posts for Critics Choice and the Globe nominations on the main page.

That’s true. Old habits die hard, I’ve been going there daily for the community more than for the articles (especially lately), which I’ve always looked at as some sort of springboard to get the discussion going, but more often than not I go straight to the comments. I would love to for The Contending to become that meeting place instead.

I get it–after all this time, I recognize a lot of the same names over and over again every awards season, and I miss that this year, but I just can't with a certain person whose brain totally shit the bed around 5 years ago because Film Twitter was mean. Honestly, I don't know that I've ever seen anyone's politics do that fast and that hardcore a 180, and it colors my memories of a lot of earlier postings–was that real? Is it real now? It's like Jo Rowling totally trashing her legacy–if some people want to set themselves on fire and claim to be a martyr, that's their call, but I don't need to supply any oxygen to the blaze.
(FWIW, I remain convinced since reading JKR's first salvo is that she has unacknowledged gender issues herself, possibly to the degree of wanting to be a male herself, and the fact that other people are daring to change their own lives scares her and reminds her of her own case, hence the fury. Gotta keep the lid on all that scary shit, right? I have a number of LGBTQ+ friends, esp. the T, who are good, decent people, and I want them to be able to live their lives in peace. In spite of all my own psychological crap/neurodiversity–nothing like finding out you're ADHD when you're almost 60, eh?–the one thing I've always known is that I'm a female–maybe not a good one, but definitely one–and I can't even begin to imagine how it must be to feel so utterly wrong in your physical body like that. I'm guessing that a lot of the hard-core haters are feeling more than a little insecure themselves,; we're definitely in a weird societal place re: gender norms, standards, etc.; I hope it gets better, but who knows?)
Life is stressful enough right now, both my life and those of my friends, and on a societal level, to cope with that in something I've done for fun since I was a teenager (I'm 63 now). I don't know if anyone else is going to come to that conclusion or not, but I do miss them, and would love to see them here as well if possible. I'm inclined to think that jumping into the lion's den with a general invitation would be a Very Bad Idea, so I guess we just have to hope that some folks start trickling over…
Jean Smart is overrated. There, I said it….Maybe all these groups had an attack of the guilts for not awarding Smart often enough for Designing Women back in the day and they’re epically overcompensating a decade+ later. Kristen Bell kicked ass on Nobody Wants This, left Smart in the dust last year and that’s that. Maybe when Kristen is in her 60s she’ll get the free ride Smart is getting this decade cause age is the ONLY reason why the latter has been winning. Reverse ageism. The wrong comedy won last night.

It’s always been the whoopee cushion for KB, going back to Veronica Mars FFS, losing to inferior flavors of the moment like Brosnahan, Waller Bridge and O'Hara. When does the disrespect toward Bell stop?
