Screenwriter and novelist Jonathan Tropper “wrangled a lunch” with Jon Hamm and pitched his satiric suburban series, Your Friends & Neighbors, to him before writing it. Once the Mad Men Emmy-winner was on board, Tropper wrote the pilot.

And now, as the final episode of season one is dropping on Apple TV+, the cast and creatives are already filming season two!

Your Friends & Neighbors examines the lives of upper-middle class suburbanites. Central to the series is Andrew “Coop” Cooper (Hamm), an affluent hedge fund manager, fired from his job and his marriage, who must find a way to move forward. He does so by deciding to steal from his rich neighbors. But that does not go as well as one might expect.

Tropper lived in Westchester, New York, for 15 years where he rubbed elbows with many wealthy neighbors, accounting for the series authenticity as well as its darkly comedic elements. Neighbors is yet another show that could be tagged a Drama or Comedy when placed in Awards consideration.

The scribe began his career writing novels, five of which were immediately optioned at auction, The Book of Joe, How to Talk to a Widower, Everything Changes, One Last Thing Before I Go, and This Is Where I Leave You.

In 2014, This Is Where I Leave You, was made into a film, adapted by Tropper and directed by Shawn Levy. The cast included Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, Adam Driver, Connie Britten, Rose Byrne, Corey Stoll, Timothy Olyphant and Jane Fonda. The movie premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and received mixed notices but has been sought out and appreciated in the decade since its initial release.

In 2013 he co-created the Cinemax action series Banshee and followed that up with Warrior in 2019.

His new series, Lucky, based on the novel by Marissa Stapley, is currently filming and will also debut on Apple TV+. The show stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Timothy Olyphant, Annette Bening, Drew Starkey and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

It’s also been announced that he will pen Star Wars: Starfighter, with Levy directing.

The Contending had a video chat with the creator and showrunner about Your Friends & Neighbors and his career.
