‘Daemons of the Shadow Realm:’ A Compelling Watch

Woah, I really did not see this coming. The brief excerpt of the premise of Daemons of the Shadow Realm seemed simple enough for a fantasy story. Certain people are born with abilities to control daemons, and we start with seeing twins born in a medieval Japanese village. The fact that they are children dividing night and day seems to be significant and scary to many.

Jumping ahead sixteen years, one of the twins, Yuru, is hunting pheasants with a bow and arrow. We learn he is very serious in wanting to keep the village prosperous. While there are crop issues, he doesn’t want to leave the village like many do for work, and is very content to live all his life here. He also has a younger sister Asa that is kept in a cage for a purpose that both she and he seem to think is important but we do not know what it is. Yuru has a goofy friend (maybe brother?) Danji, who seems like comic relief but when a fight happens he seems to know what he is doing. After that there isn’t much else I feel comfortable saying plot-wise.

They hinted early on in the hunting scene that things in this world are not what they seem but then it is blown all the way open. Like Yuru, we are all of a sudden thrown into a world where everything we thought we knew is gone. It was incredibly exciting to see it happen! From the very nature of the world as a whole being destroyed to the micro level of the village itself there seems to be something very different. It’s almost crafted to some other end, beyond being a safe little paradise. This change leads into some great action sequences with Yuru fighting, using his bow and arrows as well as some impressive jump kicks. There are also some very disturbing supernatural attacks that do not hide from the gore beyond a little bit of light covering up parts of it.

We have little time with Yuru yet I already find him intriguing. He is the golden boy of the village representing everything that is good: dedicated, hardworking, devoted to the rules and spiritual beliefs. This could make for a very dull hero but with what has happened and how his world has shattered, I really wonder what he will think about those he once respected and listened to too. He has been lied to, and maybe it is for a good reason, but this could easily change him and cause him to hate them. While I doubt he will completely turn on everything he believes based on what the attackers of the village have done, I do wonder if at least part of that group has some justifiable anger at the village leadership.

I know this is all vague but it really does need to be seen. There is a lot being thrown at you, from the world we are inhabiting to even the small details like Yuru’s family members. (At one point I thought Danji was Yuru’s younger brother, but after rewatching now I think he is his cousin.) I am incredibly curious about what the heck is going to happen next. I think we will get some answers very quickly and they aren’t secrets for secrets’ sake. Either way I have no choice but to keep watching.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm will be streaming on Crunchyroll April 4, 2026 with new episodes following every Saturday.

After seeing Gangs of New York in college, I decided to see the other Best Picture contenders that year because I had never done that before. I have been addicted to Oscar watching and film ever since. Over time, it led to discovering the Emmys and believing that television is just as good if not better than film. From there, I started following anime year-round and even looking into critically acclaimed video games and to a lesser extent music. I love writing about and immersing myself in so many creative fields and seeing how much there is out there to discover.
