Christa Miller has been killing it on the small screen since her first role opposite her aunt Susan Saint James in Kate and Allie in 1985.
And for the last three seasons, she’s gifted us the delightfully abrasive Liz Bishop on my personal pick for the Best Comedy on TV, Apple TV’s Shrinking, created by Brett Goldstein, Jason Segel and Bill Lawrence (Miller’s husband).
The series has been renewed for a fourth season and Emmy talk abounds, once again, for many of the gloriously talented ensemble members. Miller’s wonderful work is finally in the conversation.
This season proved a decidedly vulnerable one for Miller’s Liz where she had to deal with one of son’s moving back home, coordinating Paul’s (Harrison Ford) schedule as he takes time off, helping Brian (Michael Urie) and Charlie (Devin Kawaoka) with their newborn and then having to handle the scare of a life threatening illness involving her beloved husband, Derrick (Ted McGinley). And if that wasn’t enough, she continues her girl crush on Gaby (Jessica Williams) and goes to battle with her disapproving mother-in-law (played to the diva hilt by Candice Bergen).
Suffice to say, there were so many comedic and dramatic areas to mine and the thesp dives in fearlessly.
Miller appeared in two episodes of Seinfeld in the early ‘90s before becoming a regular on The Drew Carey Show, for nine seasons, then Scrubs, which just returned for its 10thseason! She was also a series regular for all six seasons of the hilarious Cougar Town.
And she’s the Music Supervisor on Shrinking as she was on Ted Lasso and Scrubs.
The Contending had the utter delight of a VIDEO chat with the lovely actress.
