Guest contributor Tarcia Bush talks to Sinners star Omar Miller about stepping into a role written specifically for him, the cultural roots that shaped Cornbread, and why the film’s music is another star of the story.

As a full-on Sinners fanatic, getting to talk with Omar Miller was a true highlight for me. I’ve seen this movie more times than I’m willing to admit, so hearing him break down Cornbread, a role written specifically for him, was a treat.

Miller shared how deeply connected he was to the character because of his Mississippi roots. Ryan Coogler had no idea the script was tied directly to Miller’s family history, yet everything aligned. As he told me, “When I read the script, I didn’t have to stretch to understand that world. I’ve been hearing these stories my whole life.”

One of my favorite moments he shared was taking his father, an avid blues lover who hasn’t been to a movie theater in 40 years, to see Sinners. The blues kicked in, the vampires showed up, and it didn’t faze him… he just nodded and said, “Yeah… that’s where we are now.”

He also talked about the film’s incredible cast, from veteran Delroy Lindo to breakout star Miles Caton, and how surreal and special it was to watch Michael B. Jordan bring the twins to life. “Some folks thought two different actors played the brothers,” he laughed, proud of how seamless the performance and technology were.

And yes, we addressed Cornbread letting Mary back into Club Juke. Omar stood by his character, saying, “She tricked old Cornbread. What do you want from me?” He walked me through the iconic “kindness” scene and the spiritual weight of the soundtrack, which we both agree is another star of the film.

By the end of our conversation, one thing was clear: Omar loves this movie every bit as much as the fans do. “Even if the awards never come,” he told me, “I still won.”
