This week’s Desperate Housewives episode, “There Won’t Be Trumpets,” offers an exploration of heroes, saviors, and really expensive funerals.

Desperate Housewives episode seventeen, “There Won’t Be Trumpets,” puts aside the first season central Mary Alice mystery in favor of slices of suburban drama for our housewives. It isn’t the best episode of season one, and it drags the cast through a handful of very regrettable plot lines. Take Susan, for example, who is still on the “sad Susan” train despite Mike making several attempts at reconciliation. She embarks on a potentially expanded love life and risks Edie’s ire along the way. Then, there’s Lynette whose isolated storyline is lifted only by the presence of Oscar winner Marlee Matlin. Does Lynette go too far with their new friendship? You know the answer to that…

In the meatier segments, Bree and Rex deal with a spiraling Andrew. How does Andrew react to being sent away to “juvie” camp? Finally, Mama Solis wakes from her coma but has a tragic accident. How will planning for her funeral impact the struggling Gabby and Carlos? Is there a silver lining in store for Gabby?

If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. The series is available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our podcasts here! Next week, we look at episode eighteen, “Children Will Listen,” where Bree comes face to face with Andrew’s sexuality.
