Melissa Fisher’s Buscando Alma, winner of prizes at this year’s Out On Film and the San Diego International Film Festival, has just announced that Angelique Cabral (who you might know from Disney’s Wish) and Ruby Greymane have joined as executive producers. This powerful short has qualified for Live Action Short this year.

After nearly two decades apart, Cristina (Carolina Gutierrez) is finally able to locate her mother, but their long-awaited reunion comes with trepidation as she has to confront the memories of her past. Melissa Fisher’s heart-rending drama BUSCANDO ALMA explores the immigrant experience, finding acceptance in your true self and the unconditional love of a parent. Actress, Activist, Philanthropist Angelique Cabral and Trans activist Ruby Greymane join this powerful film as Executive Producer.
Angelique shares that Buscano Alma is “a poignant and powerful look at the Latina immigrant experience. For our community that is often antagonized in media, this story of compassion comes at a very important time in history. An incredibly profound and beautiful film that especially resonated with me as a mother.”
Ruby adds “Buscando Alma captures the essence of the trans experience and the longing for familial acceptance so genuinely and authentically.”
Angelique Cabral most recently starred as the iconic Queen Amaya in Disney’s animated film “WISH,” alongside Chris Pine, Evan Peters, and Ariana DeBose. She also recently starred in Season 3 of ABC’s “Big Sky,” and HULU’s hit comedy series “Maggie.”
Prior to this, Cabral was seen in the critically acclaimed Amazon rotoscoped series “Undone,” which was nominated for a 2023 Critics Choice Award in the category of Best Animated Series. She also starred in CBS’ hit comedy “Life in Pieces” and the comedy series “Enlisted.” Other recent credits include Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie” alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin, Amazon’s “With Love,” as well as “Big Shot” for Disney+, and “Don’t Trust the B in Apartment 23.” Additional television credits include “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Fresh Off the Boat,” “Dragons: The Nine Realms,” “Gentefield,” “Transparent”, “The Odd Couple,” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” “Two and a Half Men,” “Criminal Minds,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Backstrom,” “State of Affairs” and “Bad Judge.”
Melissa Fisher is a Los Angeles based writer and director. She is also a member of the International Cinematographer’s Guild and has worked on Academy and Emmy Award winning films and television series. Melissa went from camera PA on Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain, to camera assist on films like La La Land, to eventually running the camera department on hit television shows like GLOW and The Dropout. Melissa has also directed several short films that have screened in Academy Accredited festivals.
Producer Katie Gunderson is a producer, writer, and actress. You might recognize her from DC’s Doom Patrol with Brendan Fraser, or network favorites like Grey’s Anatomy, Dynasty, and Scandal. She recently wrapped Two Funerals and a Freezer, a film she wrote, produced, and starred in alongside her creative partner, Kai de Mello-Folsom.
Producer Kai de Mello-Folsom has a broad range of experience in production management. His work includes The Voice, Oscars: Red Carpet, and cult Star Trek documentaries For the Love of Spock and What We Left Behind. Recently, he’s produced Disney+ originals like Olivia Rodrigo: Driving Home 2 U and Obi-Wan Kenobi: A Jedi’s Return.
Carolina Gutiérrez is a Colombian actress based in Los Angeles, California. Carolina has recently been nominated for best actress by ACA (Association of Colombian Actors) in the TV/Film category for her role as Sara in the Colombian television show “La Costilla de Eva”. More recently, her latest film “Buscando Alma” premiered at the Out on Film Festival and received first place for a short film becoming Oscar qualified thus initiating their “For your Consideration” campaign. Carolina has also appeared in several television shows, movies and national commercials, including her role as assassin Emma Ruiz on NCIS LA, Marissa on The L Word Generation Q, Sara on La Costilla de Eva in Colombia, and the lead in a national car commercial with Nissan. Carolina has studied with ACTNow, Beverly Hills Playhouse, John Homa in Los Angeles, and Eugenie Bondurant at the Patel Conservatory in Tampa, Florida. As a proud Latina trans woman, Carolina has also used her media career to advocate for and advocate for the LGBTQ+ community.
The short won the 2024 Jury Award for “Best Drama Short” at Out On Film: Atlanta’s LGBTQ Film Festival thereby qualifying it for the 2025 Oscars®.
