The New York Film Critics Circle announced The Brutalist as their pick for Best Film of 2024. Brady Corbet’s epic also took home a mention for Adrien Brody’s lead performance in the film. RaMell Ross received Best Director for his first-person POV direction of Nickel Boys, which also took home Best Cinematography. Hard Truth‘s Marianne Jean-Baptiste received Best Actress, an expected win given the organization’s long-standing love for Mike Leigh films.
In a welcome surprise, Carol Kane received Best Supporting Actress for her work in the micro-budget indie Between the Temples. Kieran Culkin began what could be a season-long dominance for his work in A Real Pain.
The New York Film Critics Circle is the first major critics group to announce their winners. The National Board of Review announces tomorrow, and the LA Film Critics will announce next week.
