Happy Tuesday, dear readers! Each week, we’ll rank the top 10 films in a specific category. While we aim to tie these lists to big releases, that won’t always be the case. Our goal? For you to enjoy, share your own lists, and join in on a lively, friendly debate. This is an interactive space to build community here at The Contending.
No fancy intros, no long essays – just a category and a list. Sound good?
It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s… Top Ten Tuesday!
This week, James Gunn’s Superman flies into theaters as the director kicks off a bold new era for the DC Universe. Starring David Corenswet as a more hopeful, principled Man of Steel, the film marks a tonal shift that embraces the character’s iconic optimism. Teaming up with producer Peter Safran, Gunn aims to bring the same creative spark that fueled his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel, but now with a cape and a whole new canon.
I was scheduled to attend an early screening Monday night but had to bow out due to personal reasons. That said, early buzz is encouraging. Critics are praising the film for honoring Superman’s enduring legacy as a beacon of truth, justice, and the American way.
To mark the launch of this new DC Universe, we’re counting down the 10 greatest films to feature characters from DC Comics. Will Gunn’s Superman one day join their ranks? Time will tell. For now… up, up, and away, let’s dive in!
