“Every Day A Little Death:” Ashes To Ashes, Dust To Susan

2024 marked the 20th anniversary of ABC’s 'Desperate Housewives.' To celebrate, Joey Moser and Clarence Moye revisit each episode of its first, Emmy-winning season.

Susan makes a confession to Edie in “Every Day A Little Death” and ends up with a whole lot of Martha Huber all over her.

Episode twelve begins with the gruesome discovery of Martha Huber’s corpse, which may or may not be smiling. Check out the episode’s intro for an explanation of that one. That kicks off the Wisteria Lane death phone tree as news spreads amongst the housewives. Edie orchestrates a proper farewell for her best friend, but only Susan (out of guilt) agrees to participate. That gives Susan an opportunity to make a significant confession to which Edie does not react well.

With Carlos home from prison but on house arrest, Gabby continues her boat show modeling gig. Carlos takes a controversial stance on ownership of his wife’s body, so Gabby withholds some of his coveted fried chicken. He still makes a terrible move against Gabby, potentially ensuring the pitter patter of little feet in the Solis household. Chalk this one up to “They Would Never Let Carlos Get Away With That Today.” “They” would also not approve of Lynette’s subplot where her son Parker is mistaken for a cancer victim, and she leverages sympathies for a coveted spot in her yoga studio’s daycare.

Finally, Bree and George continue their rather one-sided courtship, despite Bree becoming sorely tempted by a gift from George. As they drift apart, George gives us strong reasons to worry. Will Bree pay a price for toying with George’s emotions just to torture Rex?

“Every Day A Little Death” isn’t a great episode despite a few strong character-based moments. Still, we have fun walking through some of the more bone-headed choices on display.

If you’ve never seen Desperate Housewives, then now is a great time to start. The series is available to stream on Hulu / Disney+. Catch up with our podcasts here! Next week, we look at episode thirteen, “Your Fault,” where gardener John’s parents seek Gabby’s help to keep him on a college track despite their very illegal affair.
