2024 Emmys: FX’s ‘Shōgun’ Wins 14 Creative Arts Emmys

UPDATE: Shōgun takes home 14 Creative Arts Emmy wins tonight. Coupled with last night’s win, that makes a total of 15 wins for the freshman series. The Bear took home seven awards.

Last night, the Television Academy announced the first of two nights of the 2024 Creative Arts Emmy awards. The absolute best thing about last night was Angela Bassett’s win in the Narration category after nine nominations. She was shocked according to Variety, but we were absolutely thrilled. Other than a Saturday Night Live dominance of the evening, there weren’t many other awards that would perhaps give us a window into how things will go on the September 15 Primetime ceremony.

I say that with massive hesitation, though, because many Emmy watchers tend to take an underwhelming response during the Creative Arts ceremony as a sign of weakness on the Primetime ceremony. There are several examples, but the best I can think of at the moment is back in 2022 when Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso went home empty-handed at the Creative Arts, causing all Emmy watchers to largely shift to Abbott Elementary for Comedy Series. At that year’s Primetime ceremony, Ted Lasso won four Emmys, including direction and Comedy Series. There are other examples, but you get the general idea.

So, take whatever wins tonight with a grain of salt. We expect FX’s Shōgun to do very, very well tonight, but if it doesn’t, then does that mean The Crown is taking Drama Series? Probably not. The most interesting race to watch tonight will be between FX’s The Bear and HBO MAX’s Hacks. The two series will face off against each other in several half-hour and contemporary categories, but The Bear is widely expected to come out of tonight’s ceremony with more Emmys. However, if Hacks overperforms, then next Sunday’s Primetime showdown between the two titles will be even more fascinating.

Overall, FX’s Shōgun leads the 2024 Emmy nominations with 25 with the network’s The Bear following closely with 23 nominations. Hulu’s Only Murders In the Building took third place with 21 nominations. Hacks has 16 nominations, one shy from last year’s 17 nomination haul.

The major / above-the-line Emmy awards will be announced on September 15 in the Primetime ceremony, live on ABC.
