Wow.
Well I wanted some surprises, and the 76th Annual Primetime Emmys didn’t disappoint. They closed the show with the year’s biggest upset: MAX’s Hacks taking home Comedy Series over the critically acclaimed second season of FX’s The Bear. A Hacks win seemed lost when Hannah Einbinder lost Supporting Actress to Bear‘s equally deserved Liza Colón-Zayas, but Hacks pulled it out in the end. That will, no doubt, please the many, many, many who complained about The Bear‘s placement in a Comedy category.
As expected, Drama Series went to FX’s Shōgun, and Limited Series went to Netflix’s Baby Reindeer. Shōgun and The Bear led all series in the Primetime Emmy categories with four wins each. Shōgun capped off a remarkable freshman Emmy season with 18 Emmy wins, the most by a show in a single season.
The Contending will be back tomorrow night with a full team podcast breaking down all the winners and the highlights of tonight’s ceremony.

I haven’t taken the time to look it up, but Will Smith won an Emmy? That’s not THE Will Smith, right? Sorry, but I’m still a bit bitter about that whole slapping fiasco.
Ha. No, not THAT Will Smith. No slapping here.
Thrilled that Hacks upset The Bear, which should be competing as drama. Love Jodie Foster and her win for her amazing turn in True Detective.
The show itself was a bit meh. I thought Eugene and Dan Levy were excellent and would love to see them back – it works so much better when you have truly funny people and not just stand ups who’s jokes may or may not land in the room.
That said the the presenter tropes (i.e. cops, doctors, etc.) didn’t really work – if you’re going to do that sort of they you better have the best of each category behind the curtain. Love Jesse Tyler Ferguson, but he is not a beloved TV dad. Other groups had misses too. I understand the importance of the message John Leguizamo was trying to relay, but he was given way too much time when winners are being played off.
Baffled at the lack of clips during the show. Seeing the highlights from my favorite performers / shows is one of the things I like about award shows – having none of that was an odd choice.
I also think its time to dump the late night / talk show categories from the main show. Move them to the creative arts night and put the guest Emmy awards in the main show.
For the podcast-averse, how about a summary of your reactions…later today? 😇
I will reply here with a summary. How's that?
Thank you!
Ben Morris: Overall well done. Great hosts and speeches. Very pleased overall
Joey Moser: Loved how the show ended. Loved the Levys. Other award shows should pay attention.
Megan: The Emmys are the rare show that really gets it right. Loved the sets, cast reuniting, awesome hosts.
Jalal: Doesn't have live TV, consumed through online updates and clips. Everything seen was enjoyed. Odd order of events though.
Clarence: Good show. Entertaining despite mostly predictable winners (notable exceptions of course).
Tyler was robbed again for another repeat win. What will it take? He had a great submission. I hope he's nominated next year and finally wins.
Poor NBC Sunday night football helped out rare increase in Emmy audience: https://www. latimes. Com/entertainment-arts/business/story/2024-09-16/76th-primetime-emmy-awards-ratings
6.87m viewers, up 54% from last year and best showing since 2021.
